Dar Louisa, Taroudant

IN ASSOCIATION WITH ANNIE AUSTIN

A lovely Riad in the middle of the old walled town of Taroudant, which lies in the fertile Souss Valley, between the High Atlas and the Anti Atlas mountain ranges.   One hour inland from Agadir.

The house is a new build, built entirely of natural materials:  mud & brick – so it is cool in summer and warm in winter. The house and garden are designed and built by two local French architects, and internationally renowned landscape gardeners Eric Ossart and Arno Maurières. The interior is designed by a well-known interior designer, François Gilles

Property Detail

  • The house is set round a central courtyard, and is in two parts:
  • The main house has 3 double bedrooms, all en-suite; salon; dining room; atelier/work room; kitchen; laundry room/staff quarters; WC.  Large furnished terrace above, with plants.
  • The studio has 1 double bedroom en-suite; salon; kitchen; hammam with WC & changing room.  Terrace above.
  • Both the main house and the studio face onto the central courtyard, which has a small, private pool in the middle with fountain flowing into it, the garden is fully planted with fruit trees (banana, papaya), palm, bougainvillea, and other wonderfully exotic plants.  The evening garden scent is sensational.
  • The house is fully staffed and very comfortable.  The salons are decorated in a traditional African style; the dining room is dominated by an old Moroccan tent lining fabric strip, which hangs round the room.
  • Both salons and dining room have large French windows, which open directly onto the courtyard.
  • The master bedroom in the main house has a large double bed and en-suite bathroom, and its own private terrace; and it is linked to the atelier/work room.
  • The guest bedroom in the main house is a charming and cosy space with double bed, and its own small private terrace, dressing room and shower room en-suite.
  • The children’s bedroom is the only part of the house that is part of the original old house – it is a long thin room with dressing area and cupboards one end, and private salon with TV & DVD player the other end;  and above each end is a platform bedroom, each with double bed, accessed by a brick staircase.   Bathroom en-suite.
  • The studio bedroom is a large double bedroom, with 2 single beds, which can be joined and become one very large double bed.   It has its own bathroom and private terrace.
  • The hammam is a joy!  A private Moroccan bath room with shower.   A fabulous thing to do on a cold winter’s evening!
  • The children’s room is very flexible:  it can sleep 4 children who don’t mind sharing a double bed, 2 in each; or it can be comfortably shared by 2 adult friends, who would each have their own sleeping space, each one having a curtain to give privacy.
  • The house comfortably sleeps 8 adults, or 10 people if 4 are children - and the children have their own private area with TV & DVD player!
  • The courtyard is wonderfully light, and the main house terrace is a sun-trap – with cool shaded area, and all fully furnished with comfortable outside furniture.   The studio terrace is used mainly by the staff, for hanging out washing and so-on.
  • The house is equipped with wireless internet connection.

Local Area

A majestic walled city, Taroudant is half citadel and half oasis. It is a town of great charm and grace. The ruddy, clay houses, minarets and groves of oranges and pomegranates seem to drowse beneath the gaze of the frosted High Atlas to the north and the Anti-Atlas to the south.

The walls, the souks and the backdrop of the High Atlas are the town’s main attractions and the best way to see the town is by horse-drawn carriage especially at dusk.  The souks are not large but they are varied; there is a strong tradition of local craft and much of the work here is of outstanding quality.

Taroudant is an hour’s drive from Agadir and its International airport and about three hours drive from Marrakech. It is worth making excursions to the magnificent Glaoui Kasbah at Taliouine (50 miles); through the Anti Atlas Mountains to the oasis town of Tata; exhilarating surf beaches at Sidi Moussa; the walled town of Tiznit; the natural wonders of Tafraoute and of course there are the spectacular passes in the High Atlas within reach of Taroudant.
