The Olive House, Zakynthos

Find this villa on google maps.

The Olive House is situated in the unspoilt North East of the island of Zakynthos, with wonderful views over cypress and ancient olives down to the sea below, the eastern coastline of the island and the Peloponnese mountains of mainland Greece. Featured in the March 2010 edition of Tatler magazine.

The house has a gloriously secluded setting, in a fold in the land amongst ancient olive terraces with views of sea and countryside from every room.  No other houses can be seen, nor are you overlooked, yet you are not remote, being only 5 minutes drive from the coast and less than 10 minutes from the local village of Ano Volimes.

Carefully designed with the help of a leading French architect, the house benefits from cooling breezes and always has a choice of shady seating areas.  All the rooms lead out on to covered terraces with views to the swimming pool and the sea beyond.

Property Detail

The house is extremely comfortable, with a sense of simple luxury.

  • Accommodation is all on one level with limed, beamed ceilings. The house sleeps 8 in 4 double bedrooms, each with their own shower rooms, 3 of the bedrooms can become twins. One room is in the cottage. There is a large open-plan sitting room with fireplace, dining area and kitchen with breakfast bar.
  • All the rooms have large French windows leading out on to a long covered terrace with views to the swimming pool and beyond.
  • The old olive grower's cottage, just yards from the front door, has its own covered terrace leading on to a paved courtyard, partially shaded by ancient olive trees. The terraces around the house provide flexible sitting and eating areas and there is a built-in barbecue on the main dining terrace.
  • The 15 metre infinity pool is situated below the house and is salt-chlorinated. It has a delightful covered eating area, with pool fridge and shower, as well as loungers and large umbrellas. The terraced grounds abound with wild flowers in the spring and colourful shrubs in summer.
  • A Greek speaking English house manager looks after the house.  Shopping, cooking, picnics and babysitting can all be arranged with her directly and a meal can be prepared for your arrival, as well as a stocked fridge and cellar. (All payable locally). She will provide you with as much discreet service as you need to give you the perfect holiday.

Please note: in view of the terraced nature of the land the house is not ideally suitable for very young children.  As the house is set in countryside a little way from the village, a car is a necessity and can be easily arranged.

Local Area

  • The island offers the choice of enjoying the tranquility of the villa and views and of trying the local tavernas, swimming in the many bays in crystal-clear sea.  Inland explore mountain villages, ancient monasteries or enjoy stunning walks.  You will also want to visit Zakynthos Town, with its shops and bustle and Volimes – the main town in the north of the island where you will get a real flavour of local life.
  • Agios Nikolaos has a really nice local beach taverna with sunbeds and the zany Art Cafe with great music, where you can relax with drinks and cocktails until the early hours – perfect for night owls!
  • Shopping - Katastari for household shopping - 20 mins drive.  There is a good supermarket, chemist, baker and butcher, but no bank (you can change money and hire a car at Alikes - 20 mins drive in other direction).  There are 2 small mini market shops locally in Agios Nikolaos.
  • Peligoni Club - within 10 minutes drive.   It is English run and offers excellent dinghy sailing and windsurfing, good swimming off rocks and pontoon.  By arrangement guests can also use tennis court, sun loungers, bar, restaurant and attend party nights - please discuss when making your booking.  It really is a great place for teenagers who love going there!
  • Boats - small boats can be chartered nearby in Agios Nikolaos and larger craft brought over from Kefalonia – the setting for the film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin - as well as to some of the picturesque bays and small islands.  Please ask when making your booking for the house.
  • Car Hire – small companies locally, one of them is called “Alikes” – they will deliver your car to the airport.  At some houses we recommend you have a four wheel drive.
  • Beaches - closest sandy beaches are Micronisi and Xigia (15 minutes down the coast to Zakynthos).  Alikes, further down the coast, is a busy, big sandy beach with lots of water sports.
  • Walking - lovely walks behind house in the hills, particularly in spring and autumn when flowers are out in abundance. You can cut across the hills behind the house to the west coast and then back via Volimes (allow 3 hours).

The West Coast - a different country and well worth exploring. Remote villages and coves, heather covered hills dropping down to translucent green pine woods, olives and vineyards. Unspoiled and empty even in high season. Porto Vroumi is particularly lovely and also good for boats to shipwreck beach. Pedalos for exploring caves are good fun.

Shipwreck Beach and Blue Caves - boats from Agios Nikolas or Porto Vroumi.

Local Services

A professional chef who lives on the island is available to cook and deliver delicious dinners or lunches for special occasions.  By arrangement when making your booking – payable locally.

A small English-speaking community is located near Agios Nikolaos and as a result almost everyone at the shops and restaurants speak English.  In particular, one of the best restaurants in the area is owned by a Greek/English couple and will deliver dinner to the house by arrangement beforehand when making your booking.

The house manager comes in 3 times a week and she will look after you and make arrangements for you locally.  She is a pool technician and looks after the pool as well. She can organise boats, car hire, sailing and visits and recommend places to go.  She is available for more hours if required at €17 euros per hour - payable locally.
