Local Area
Como with the deepest lake and the tallest mountains is the most spectacular of all the Italian lakes. Its calm water, dramatic landscape and friendly residents combine to make it a memorable destination. European travellers since those on their ‘Grand Tour’ have voiced their amazement at the sheer scale of the mountains and the shape of the lake with its vast body of deep blue water lined by brilliant green hillsides dotted with clusters of cream, gold, pink and terracotta homes. Above them looms a ring of rugged peaks, some of which are snow-capped in summer. There are many literary connections including Shelley, Wordsworth and Longfellow. Rossini, Liszt and Bellini composed some of their greatest works whilst staying on Lake Como.
